Upper Chaku A Hydroelectric Project is run-of-river (RoR) project with installed capacity 22.2 MW (2x11.1 MW) developed by Shivashree Hydropower Limited. It utilizes the water of chaku Khola at an elevation of 2178 masl which flows between Phulpingkatti VDC and Marming VDC (currently both Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality) of Sindhupalchowk Disctrict. The catchment area of the project at headworks site is 41.2 km2 . The project is around 100 km north east from kathmandu and the powerhouse of the project is located approximately 2 km upstream from the confluence of Chaku Khola and Bhotekoshi River at Chaku Bazar .
The design discharge of the project is 3.25 m3/s and gross head of the project is 815.5 m . The geographical coordinates of the project as per the generation license issued by Department of Electricity Development (DoED) is located in between Longitudes 85° 56’ 00’’ to 85° 58’ 06’’ and Latitudes 27° 51’ 31’’ to 27° 52’ 31’’. The headrace tunnel of the project is 2509 m long with finished size of 2.5 m x 2.5 m and Inverted D Shape which discharge the water to 8m diameter and 16m high surface surge tank at outlet. The penstock of the project is 1500m and diameter of penstock ranges from 1.6 to 1.2 m upto bifurcation with 10mm - 36 mm thickness. After bifurcation, the penstock splits into 2 pipes of 0.8 m diameter and hit the two turbines in the powerhouse. The powerhouse is surface type located on the right bank of Chaku Khola with 2 nos of 11.1 MW horizontal axis pelton turbines and corresponding generators and transformers of 15 MVA and 16 MVA respectively. The project will generate 118 GWh of annual energy which is being delivered to Lamosanghu Substation through 22 km long 132 KV Transmission Line as per the Grid Connection Agreement concluded with Nepal Electricity Authority(NEA) on 31st Baisakh, 2067.
The project is now in operation stage. The commercial operation date (COD) is 1st Jestha 2078.
